Chinese brush painting, or sumi-e painting, as it is called in Japan, is based on the calligraphy strokes of Chinese and Japanese writing. Created with a round, animal-hair brush and ink, each stroke follows a strict tradition which lays down the correct angle of the brush, the intensity of the ink, and the speed of the movement. Added to this technical skill is the chi (meaning spirit or life force) of the brush artist, which brings the painting to life. In fact, in order to create a successful Chinese brush painting, it is impossible to have the discipline of the technique without the passion of the spirit, and conversely the brush painting will be unsatisfactory if there is spirit but no discipline in the brush stroke. As in all things, balance brings harmony.

The Center for Peace Studies & Violence Prevention is on the site of the shootings that took place in 2007. One of the goals of the gallery is to transmute these tragic energies with the beauty of art. I am honored to have been invited to contribute my creativity in this beautiful, peaceful space.
The show featured a selection of landscape and flower paintings, several never on display before. More info at: http://www.cpsvp.vt.edu/gallery.html
